II International Conference on Simulation for Additive Manufacturing – Sim-AM 2019

The Second International Conference on Simulation for Additive Manufacturing (Sim-AM 2019) was held in Pavia, Italy, on 11-13 September 2019. The conference first edition was held in Munich, Germany, in 2017.

Sim-AM is an ECCOMAS Thematic Conference and an IACM Special Interest Conference.

The conference offered the opportunity to gain insights into CAD, part chain, innovative application, material modeling, multi-physics and multi-scale simulation, shape and topology optimization, simulation for different AM technologies (e.g. fused deposition and laser based methods), validation and verification, and other topics in the AM field.

In addition to plenary lectures, general and invited sessions, the conference was organized in industrial Workshops driven by AM industries with the active presence of scientific experts.

The conference, a major success with over 300 delegates from all over Europe, US, Asia, was hosted in the gorgeous setting of the historical halls of the University of Pavia and ended with a dinner in the stunning Collegio Borromeo quad.

Workshop “Focus on: Additive Manufacturing”

In the framework of the 3D@UniPV Strategic Research Plan, the University of Pavia was pleased to host the Lombardia Aerospace Cluster event entitled “Focus on: Additive Manufacturing” on June 26.

This is the first meeting, dedicated to Additive Manufacturing, within the Aerospace@Industry4.0 program organized by the Lombardia Aerospace Cluster with the support of partner members (universities and companies).

The introductory speeches were given by Prof. Francesco Svelto, Pro-Rector for Third Mission and Rector in pectore of the University of Pavia, and Ing. Angelo Vallerani, President of Lombardia Aerospace Cluster.

Prof. Ferdinando Auricchio, coordinator of the 3D@UniPV project, and Prof. Bianca Maria Colosimo (PoliMI) have presented their research experience, respectively on simulation and optimization of AM components and on process control issues in additive manufacturing; while Ing. Giuseppe Pagnano, Technological Advisor Lombardia Aerospace Cluster, gave an overview on product and application certification.

After the coffee break, the companies members of the Cluster illustrated their experiences on AM state-of-the-art and future developments.

The workshop was closed with a session with Ing. Paolo Cerabolini, Vice Coordinator of the Lombardia Aerospace Cluster Technical Scientific Center.

All participants were invited to visit our AM laboratories and enjoyed a final networking cocktail.

Prof. Auricchio @ National Academy of Sciences

During the second annual assembly of the National Academy of Sciences, held on November 6, prof. Ferdinando Auricchio from the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia held the lecture entitled “3D printing: an enabling and fascinating technology. From the science of materials to modeling, from surgery to civil engineering”.

Prof. Auricchio was nominated National Member (in “supernumerary”) in 2018.

The National Academy of Sciences was founded in 1782 on the initiative of Antonio M. Lorgna, mathematician and hydraulic engineer, together with the forty most eminent italian scientists, including Lazzaro Spallanzani, Alessandro Volta, Lodovico de Lagrange, Ruggero Giuseppe Boscovich: hence the current name of “Società dei Quaranta” (today “Academy of the XL”).
