3D4MED – 3D Printing for Surgery: A new technology for an effective and customized surgery!

On October 29th, 2018, 3D4MED was inaugurated at Fondazione I.R.C.C.S. Policlinico San Matteo of Pavia.

3D4MED is the first 3D printing clinical laboratory in Italy; it is equipped with different 3D printing technologies able to create patient-specific anatomical models for surgical planning, training and simulation, and to develop patient-specific instrumentation and innovative prototypes.

The laboratory was born from the collaboration between the group of Computational Mechanics and Advanced Materials, coordinated by Prof. Ferdinando Auricchio, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia, and the Unit of General Surgery II of the Policlinico San Matteo, directed by Prof. Andrea Pietrabissa.

3D4MED team is formed by: Eng. Stefania Marconi, who directs and supervises all the laboratory activities, Eng. Valeria Mauri and Eng. Erika Negrello.

Press Review: Prof. Auricchio member of the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze

Prof. Ferdinando Auricchio has been elected National Member of the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze, the only national scientific Academy continuously in function since its establishment. It was founded in 1782 on the initiative of the mathematician and hydraulic engineer Antonio M. Lorgna. The founding Members were, besides Lorgna, the forty most distinguished scientists of all over Italy, including Lazzaro SpallanzaniAlessandro VoltaLodovico de LagrangeRuggero Giuseppe Boscovich: hence the current name Society of the XL, Società dei Quaranta.

Industry 4.0, Technology and the Law

The “Industry 4.0, Technology and the Law” Winter School 2018 will take place from Monday 5th to Friday 9th of February 2018 at Collegio Ghislieri. It is organized by the Department of Law, the Interdepartmental Research Center at the European Center of Law, Science and New Technologies (ECLT)and the Collegio Ghislieri of Pavia, in collaboration with the Center for Health Technologies (CHT) at the University of Pavia.

Main topics of the Winter School:

  • Big Data: risks and abuses, regulation, potential and concrete advantages.
  • Cybersecurity and industrial information protection
  • Industry 4.0 and smart working:
  • how does the distribution of work change for different professions?
  • Work and tasks: what is the Jobs Act impact in this context? What is the evaluation one year after the opening to the smart working contracts?
  • The new relationship between man and job security
  • What employment policies to put in place to exploit this new revolution?
  • Industrial invention regulation and patent protection, in the era of 3D printers
  • Regulation for the personal data protection data in respect of the new European Regulation

A new Multisensory Map for MTE Museum

In the framework of “La Scienza a portata di mano” Project, funded by Regione Lombardia at the Museum of Electrical Technology (MTE) of the University of Pavia, the research groups of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAr) and Spazio Geco are working on the creation of multisensory maps (tactile and with audio guides) of the different sections of the Museum.

The goal, which integrates with the tactile map of the entire exhibition space created last spring, is to make the MTE even more inclusive, providing visitors with a useful tool not only to orientate themselves within the different MTE sections but also to know the most significant elements of the Museum through a short audio description.

This is a very innovative research path: usually the exhibition spaces have a tactile map or an audio guide; the attempt to combine both of them represents an important innovation and an added value that is really able to include all visitors in a unique cultural journey. Furthermore, the use of FDM technology with three different colors will ensure maximum consistency with the Museum’s general map already created, bringing the MTE to be a reference of inclusion and integration at National level.

Team DICAr: Prof. F. Auricchio, Prof. A. Greco, Ing. G. Alaimo, Ing. V. Giacometti, Ing. S. Marconi, Ing. V. Mauri.

New Objet260 CONNEX3 (Stratasys®)

A new Stratasys® Objet260 CONNEX3 (material jetting 3D printer) is now available, thanks to the collaboration between General Surgery II of Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, directed by Prof. Andrea Pietrabissa, and the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, directed by Prof. Ferdinando Auricchio.

Objet260_Connex3

PolyJet 3D printer that involves the use of photopolymer resins crosslinking with a UV light. It offers the possibility to obtain 3D printed models combining different colors and materials, included deformable and transparent ones. Particularly suitable to reproduce anatomical models of the abdominal cavity, it is able to achieve smallest details of about 20 microns.
