Snorkeling masks in the fight against Covid-19

Thanks to the collaboration between San Matteo Hospital, 3D4MED, and 3D@UniPV, starting from Decathlon’s Easybreath snorkeling masks, we have been able to produce masks for forced ventilation to test their performance for patients treatment.

With the intention of replicating the idea from the company Isinnova, Dr. Francesco Falaschi (M.D., General Medicine 2, San Matteo Hospital) asked Mr. Daniele Cerliani (vice-president of Confindustria and Federmeccanica delegate) for help, who acted as a connecting element between the hospital San Matteo and the University of Pavia.

Stefania Marconi, Gianluca Alaimo, and Ferdinando Auricchio from the University’s 3D printing laboratories (3D4MED and 3D@UniPV) supported the valves design and manufacturing, while Dr. Francesco Falaschi tested the masks.

Thanks to several donations of masks from citizens, it was possible to engineer and 3D print the valves needed to do the tests, up to a more advanced version of Isinnova’s project.
