Prerequisites

Learning outcomes
The course intends to suggest some starting points and critical reflection tools about structures and specific languages of medieval documentary sources, with particular attention to dynamics (tradition/experimentation) that qualify the production of sources during periods of change in the political and institutional systems.
Course contents
The course will analyze - through a reading of and commentary on documents (charters, //brevia//, //placita//, diplomas) and laws (Langobard and Carolingians) - the characteristics of late Medieval documentation, in particular regarding the topics of the "functions" of documents and justice (forms and procedure). It will also deal with the changes in the political system which, beginning in the second half of the 11th century, accompany a political transition (the coming of communal governments): changes in the documentary functions and practices. The final part of the course will provide a general examination (types, chronologies) of the early recording forms used by the communal offices.
