Giacomo Menochio
(Pavia, 1532 - Milano, 1607)
Of noble family, he studied law at the University of Pavia, where, just graduated, at age 22, he was appointed teacher of civil institutions.
Soon his fame became so great as to induce many Italian lordships to invite him at their universities with the illusion of attractive remuneration.
In 1561 he was a lecturer at the new University of Mondovi and was then hired by the Serenissima to the University of Padova with a salary of 1,000 roman crowns per annum, exceptional salary in those days that, for twenty-three years, prevented Menochio from leaving. In 1588 he was called as professor of civil law in Milan where he was elected Senator and later President of the magistrate extraordinary. Philip II appointed him as his personal advisor.
Among his many works: the De praesumptionibus, conjecturis, signis et judiciis commentaria (Genevae, Tournes, 1670; location: 30 L 47) and the De iurisdictione, imperio et potestate ecclesiastica ac seculari libri tres (Lugduni, J. A. Cramer et P. Perachon, 1695; location: M. N. 18 E 3).
