Alfonso Corradi

Alfonso Corradi(Bologna 1833 - Pavia 1892)

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 1856, obtaining the chair of general pathology first at the Ateneo of Modena, then in Palermo. In 1867 he was transferred, with Ministerial initiative, to the University of Pavia, where he gave proof of his extensive knowledge in the composition and virtues of drugs, performed historical investigations on the conduct of epidemic diseases in Italy and deepened his studies on the history of surgery and obstetrics in Italy, in the period beginning late XVIIIth century until 1870.

He was an effective member of the R.Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere, also member of Consiglio superiore della Pubblica Istruzione and Consiglio superiore di Sanità; It was moreover president of Società Italiana d'Igiene.

The ministry wanted him twice Rector of the University of Pavia entrusting the administration of the Collegio Ghislieri.

Corradi left important texts on the history of medicine, among which should be recalled at least Annali delle epidemie occorse in Italia dalle prime memorie fino al 1850 (Bologna, 1865-1894; location: Corr. 85 E 41). Its rich medical library is now kept by the University Library of Pavia.
