Prerequisites
The module builds on the learning outcomes acquired through Teoria e Tecnica della Progettazione and Disegno 1.
Learning outcomes
A. Critical understanding of the social economic and environmental context, from which to develop the project. This may include theoretical, cultural references and design precedents.
It includes analytical skills in reading and interpreting the urban context, also through a variety of methods proposed by the tutors.
B. Develop a design proposal at the most adequate scales, by responding to the specific issues/challenges.
C. Representing the analytical and design work at the most appropriate scales.
Course contents
The module develops the topic of urban commons in relationship to the city, its open spaces and vacant or under utilised buildings. In that respect, it unfolds the role of architecture in respect to 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals such as Sustainable Cities and Communities (n.11).
The module aims at providing students with those analytical tools useful to architectural design in urban and historical contexts. A range of qualitative methods will be explained through front lectures. Practical assignments will let the students apply to site specific case studies.
The analytical mapping and critical analysis of the city is meant to be propaedeutical to the design phase. The site for design will be selected by students also as a result of the previous tasks and their outcomes, and in collaboration with stakeholders and local communities.

Assessment methods
The teaching team will provide students with tutorials on a weekly basis. These will inform the following steps of the assignments. Students will present their work to the class on a regular basis, through digital and/or hard copies of their proposals. Students will receive comments orally and also in written/graphic form.
The participation in team working is encouraged as part of the learning process and to stimulate the individual critical reflection.
Peer to peer reviews in between students, and between students and tutors, are strongly encouraged.
More bibliographical references and design precedents will be suggested in due course.
The final examination will be in the form of an oral conversation, on the basis of the portfolio prepared by the student.
This will include all the elements/outputs produced during the module, including short assignments. Multimedia presentations and large format prints will be agreed with the teaching team.
Further information
The module takes advantage from tutors, who have been selected by the Faculty.
Tutors-led activities will run in parallel to the module. They will provide students with practical skills and techniques useful to the design phase. Tutors act as peer reviewers and provide students with reflections and tips on how to improve their work.
