Learning outcomes
The course provides the framework for understanding international organizations, their evolution and modus operandi with a focus on the UN and OSCE as far as the protection of human rights and the search for peace and security are concerned. It is designed to offer, in addition to the theoretical background, the point of view of the field work, with analysis of numerous case studies and simulations. At the end of the course, the students will acquire useful information on how to get to work for the IGOs.
Course contents
The challenges of Global Governance: Politics and Processes. 2) International Organizations and Theoretical Analysis 3) The United Nations. Principal Bodies, Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs, Financing System 4) Regional Organizations: Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East. Focus on the OSCE. 5) Promoting Human Development 6) Protecting the Environment 7) Interventions: Protecting Human Rights; Peace and Security. From Peacekeeping to Peacebuilding. Case studies: a) UN intervention in Bosnia - Herzegovina. b) International Election Missions: South Africa - 1994; the first post-war elections in Bosnia Herzegovina, 1996. 8) Post-war Reconstruction. Case Study on return and integration of refugees and minorities: Croatia; International Tribunals for War Crimes focus on ICTY 9) Institution Building, Democratization, Rule of Law, Minorities' Protection. Case Study: the United Nations Mission ad Interim in Kosovo. 10) Working in IGOs: first steps and career path
Teaching methods
The course is based both on lectures and students’ involvement in group work, analysis and debate on the main topics of the course.
Reccomended or required readings
Teaching material, consisting of slides and relevant bibliographic references, will be provided at the end of each lesson.

Assessment methods
Written examination based on short essays. It aims to test the level of knowledge of the subject but also the ability to make thematic links and analysis.
