Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin.
Learning outcomes
The module will be articulated in 12 frontal lectures (2 hours each) and 6 semianrs or workshops. It will provide the opportunity to analyse papyrus documents useful for the study of ancient Greek and roman History. Students will acquire the skills necessary to read ancient documents, and interpret papyrological editions and publications.
Course contents
Part I.
Hellenistic documents.

1. Royal edicts.

2. The archive of Zenon.

3. The royal economy.

4. Petitions to the king and to officials.

5. Religions and ethnic communities.

6. Private documents and letters.

Part II. Roman Egypt.
7. Imperial titulatures and dates in the documents.

8. Imperial edicts and letters.

9. Edicts of the prefects of Egypt.

10. Petitions and citizenship.

11. (True and false) judicial proceedings.

12. Fiscal documents.

13. Private letters.

14. "Jewish" documents.

15. "Christian" documents.

Part III. Workshop at Museo Egizio, Turin.
Teaching methods
The lectures will read and comment upon existing editions of papyrus documents. The workshop at Museo Egizio will provide an opportunity to see original documents.
