Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Italian history and historiography (1861-current days) is needed. Contemporary History exam recommended.
Learning outcomes
The course aims at analyzing origins and development of cultural traditions, organisations and political goals of italian political parties. A comparative approach will be applied to 19th-20th Century as far as political mobilisation and institutional apparatus are concerned.
Course contents
Political organisations and processes in Liberal, Fascist end Republican Italy will be considered. "Trasformismo" and "political families" (the Liberals, the Repububblicans-Radicals, Socialists, Catholics) will be examined. The turning point of WW1 will be considered and the rise of two new parties (Communist Party and Popular Party). Fascist movement towards party organisation will be considered, as well as the role of antifascist parties in exile. The party system in Italian Republic will be investigated, as to major mass-based parties (DC, PCI, PSI) and minor parties (PSDI, PLI, PRI, MSI) well into 1970s. New political actors produced during the crise of the First Republic and women's movements will be also considered.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars with discussion of documents and sources.

Students will choose one text from a reference list suggested by the teacher in the opening lecture.
