Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide solid historical, methodological and critical instruments to evaluate the complex work of creative research that led Gabriele d’Annunzio and Luigi Pirandello to produce dramatic sketches and short stories with theatrical setting. Through the clever expedient of the flying bat, will be considered their performing strategies, as well as their experimentation in bourgeois drama and cinema.
Course contents
Specialized Course: The flying bat: performing strategies for d’Annunzio and Pirandello.

Evaluation of the importance of the theatre in the first journalistic production of Gabriele d’Annunzio, considering the dramatic sketch 'The Imaginary Bat' (1885), its connection with bourgeois drama and its relevance for Luigi Antonelli. Moreover, will be studied a short story with theatrical setting by Luigi Pirandello, 'The Bat' (1920), and its use in film projects. Deep analysis of d’Annunzio’s and Pirandello’s techniques of writing and performing strategies – with particular attention to dialogues, monologues, environment, gesturing, characterization, meta-theatrical dimension – in order to analyse stage and audience between the late XIXth century and the Thirties.
