Knowledge of Portuguese language required.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn about the main events, personalities and ideas related to Portugal, specifically in the19th and 20th century. Students will critically analyse literary texts and essays, being able to relate each text to the others and to contextualize them into the Portuguese and European cultural history.
Course contents
Literature as a means to interpret culture.
During the course, students will analyse literary texts and critical essays, and some works of art, movies or music pieces, through which will be possible to define and interpret some characters of the Portuguese culture. The aim of the course is to meditate on the connection that these texts maintain with the political and social changes occurred in Portugal in the 19th and 20th Century.
Teaching methods
Classes will be delivered in Portuguese. Individual presentations, reading and discussion of essays. Exhibition of documentaries and films.

• Literary and critical texts will be indicated or given in paper or pdf during the course.
Assessment methods
For students who will attend the classes the evaluation will be determined by the following:
60% from the final text in Portuguese
20% from the individual presentation (10 minutes). Only if the number of students allows it.
20% from a review of a movie or a documentary (1-2 pages in Portuguese)
