ORAL TEST

BALDASSARI GABRIELE (titolare) - 6 ECTS

A language proficiency in Italian appropriate to the comprehension of literary language, a knowlege of Petrarch’s “Canzoniere” and a grounding in history of Italian language, metrics and philology are requested.
Students will have to study by themselves a unit concerning history and texts of Italian literature in the Renaissance (see below).

By focusing on Italian lyric poetry from the middle of 15th century to the beginning of 16th century, the course will allow students:
1) to acquire knowledge about often not well-known authors and works that actually play an important role in Italian Renaissance literature;
2) to deal with the complex historiographical debate about Petrarchism;
3) to acquaint themselves with a diacronic and diatopic view of Italian literature;
4) to acquire knowledge about features and questions related to the “canzoniere form”;
5) to improve their skills in metrical and stylistic analysis of texts;
6) to acquaint with the so-called intertextuality and its critical entails;
7) to find their way in philological questions, as the first way to approach a literary work and understand it.

Lyric poetry in Northern Italy from 15th century to the beginning of 16th century.

Lectures will focus on:
1) lyric poetry in the first half of 15th century and Giusto de’ Conti;
2) Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Amorum libri tres and the Este court culture;
3) courtly poetry between the end of 15th century and the beginnig of 16th century;
4) Pietro Bembo’s canonization of Petrarch model.

Texts read over the lectures will be available on line. A complete list will be provided at the end of the course.

Lectures will make use of slide shows and help students to acquaint with useful devices in literary analysis.
Lectures will focus on representative authors and texts from 15th century to Pietro Bembo. After an introduction to each period and each author, the light will be cast on philological questions and on the analysis of texts.
The course aims to face students with texts, to provide them with a set of skills in literary analysis and to involve them in a debate about texts and critical issues.

All students have to read:

B. Monographic course: Lyric poetry in Northern Italy from 15th century to the beginning of 16th century.

Attending students will prepare the texts that will be read and examined during the course.
Non-attending students will have to get in touch with the teacher in order to get a list of texts to prepare.

During an oral exam students will have to prove both their general preparation and the preparation of the monographic course. As for the latter one, the exam will move from a text and assess the knowledge of its main elements (author, metric genre, themes) as well as of its meaning (through the paraphrase), and then will touch other sides and issues, referring in particular to the essays as for non-attending students.
