Learning outcomes
This module aims to provide a hands-on approach to the study of Papyrology as a discipline of great importance for both Philologists and Historians.

At the end of the module the student will be able to interpret ancient literary and documentary texts in Greek or Latin, or in Italian translation. To this end, a part of the classes will be devoted to introducing and illustrating the methods used by professional scholars to prepare a critical edition of an ancient text.

Week 1.
1. Introduction to Papyrology.
2. The first Greek books.
3. Documentary texts.

Week 2.
4. School and Education.
5. Museum and Library.
6. Reading class.

Week 3.
7. Documents of the Ptolemaic period. Edicts of the Kings.
8. Documents of the Ptolemaic period. The Archive of Zenon.
9. Reading class.

Week 4.
10. Roman documents. Economy and society.
11. Roman documents. Petitions to the emperors and response.
12. Reading class.

Week 5.
13. Papyri and 'the other'. Jews.
14. Christians.
15. Letters of women.

Week 6.
16. Poets and pedants.
17. Everyday writing in Roman and Byzantine Egypt.
18. Reading class.
Teaching methods
Three two-hour meetings a week.

The first two will be frontal lectures. The third meeting will be a reading class that will introduce the students to the techniques of transcription and edition of fragmentary texts used by professional papyrologists. The materials will be handed out in the course of the lectures.

Students are strongly advised to attend all lectures and reading classes, given the interactive nature of the teaching, that will give them the chance to make their voice heard.
