The aim of the module is to familiarize the students with the language and the methods of both chimica thermodynamics and kinetics.
Course contents
The first principle of thermodynamics: internal Energy, heat and work, enthalpy. Thermodynamical functions and iter functions. Relationship between enthalpy and internal energy. Thermochemistry. The standard formation enthalpy: definition, method of determination and applications. Constant pressure and constant volume molar heat capacities. Enthalpy of chemical reactions and temperature. Relationship between standard formation enthalpy and bond energy. The second principle of thermodynamics: the entropy function. Calculation of absolute entropies (third principle of thermodynamics). The thermodynamical function G and the chemical equilibrium. Calculation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction: dependence from temperature and pressure. Chemical kinetics: the rate of chemical reaction. The kinetic constant and the reaction order. Experimental methods for the determination of reaction order. The kinetic constant and the temperature: the Arrhenius equation. Mechanism of reaction: elementary process and molecularity. The method of the stationary state. The chain reactions.
