The objective of this course is the definition of the notion of theatre direction in the 20th century, with particular attention to the Italian context.

The course will consider the most important historical and theoretical questions about the birth and the affirmation of theatre direction in Europe. A specialized focus will consider the beginning of direction in Italy, with particular attention to the founding of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. Some lessons will take the form of a conference-testimony with professional directors.
