Prerequisites
Knowledges of cellular physiology, human anatomy and biology, as for the exams of the first year of course.
Learning outcomes
To provide the students with a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the mechanisms of body function. The course
is organized around the central theme of homeostasis -- how the body meets changing demands while maintaining the internal constancy necessary for all cells and organs to function.
Course contents
Central Nervous System: general organization and function. The blood-brain barrier. Medulla, Medulla oblongata, Midbrain, Cortex, Basal nuclei and Cerebellum. Posture and voluntary movements. Neuronal circuits. The reticular formation. Superior functions of the CNS. Arousal mechanisms, sleep and the circadian rhythm. The electrical activity of the brain (EEG). Sensory perception. Emotions, cognition, motivation, attention, learning, memory, personality. The
motor system: motor units, spinal reflexes. Sense organs and receptors. Coding of sensory information. The Senses: Cutaneous, deep and visceral sensation (touch and pain); Vision; Hearing; Equilibrium; Smell; Taste. The autonomic nervous system (orto- and parasympathetic system, receptors, organization, functions). Hypothalamus-hypophysis axis.
Respiration: mechanics of respiration; pulmonary circulation; gas exchange. The cardiovascular system. Dynamic of blood flow. Arterial and arteriolar circulation. Capillary circulation. Lymphatic circulation and interstitial fluid volume.
Venous circulation. The heart as a pump. Mechanical events of the cardiac cycle. Origin and spread of cardiac excitation. The electrocardiogram. Cardiac arrhythmias. Heart failure. Cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms. Blood
pressure. Hyper- and hypotension. Blood. Bone marrow. White blood cells. Platelets. Red blood cells. Plasma.
Hemostasis. Lymph. Respiration. Pulmonary function. Mechanics of respiration. Gas exchange and transport. Regulation
of respiration. Respiratory adjustments in health and disease. Renal function: glomerular filtration; reabsorption, secretion and excretion of the ultrafiltrate; hydro-saline balance and hormones involved; pH renal regulation: acidification
of the urine; urine concentration. Digestive system: nutrients digestion, absorption, secretion. Metabolism, nervous and
hormonal regulation of the digestive function, liver and biliary system, pancreas. Homeostatic systems. The endocrine system.
