		Prerequisites
A basic knowledge in General and Organica Chemistry is required

		Learning outcomes
The course has the purpose to give a basic knowledge on the main metabolic pathways occurring in the cells. Furthermore the main classes of macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids and proteins) are considered in relation to their structure and functions.

		Course contents
Proteins and aminoacids. The peptide bond and the four structural levels of proteins. Mioglobin and hemoglobin. Enzymes and coenzymes.
Carbohydrates: structure and functions. Lipids: structure and functions. Cholesterol.
Biological membranes and transport mechanisms.
ATP and its importance.
Metabolic pathways: glycolysis, Krebs'cycle, beta-oxidation and oxidative phosphorilation.
General considerations on amin acids metabolism.
