Prerequisites
The student must know the basic knowledge of anatomy, neurology and physiology.
Learning outcomes
The module aims to learn the scientific bases of the rehabilitation treatment in patients with peripheral nervous system disease. The student will learn the basic notions of the characteristics of the different types of neuropathy; of some pathologies, the principles of physiotherapy treatment will be described in detail, with the practical application of assessment tools (scales, laboratory movement analysis) and specific exercises for patient rehabilitation.
Course contents
Review of general elements of the PNS anatomy; Clinical and pathophysiological classification of neurolesions of the PNS; General framework of Spinal Muscular Atrophy; Diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ; Augmentative Alternative Communication Tools; Types of wheelchairs and walkers: pros and cons, clinical cases of use; General overview of balance impairments; Evaluation and treatment of generic balance disorders; Classification, evaluation and treatment of vestibular neuropathies; Vestibular rehabilitation exercise protocols; Use of liberating maneuvers for Benign Paroxysmal Positional vertigo; Specialized clinical evaluation: stabilometry for the analysis of static balance; Specialized clinical evaluation: baropodometry for gait analysis; Specialized clinical evaluation: Foot Posture Index for the evaluation of the prone/supinated foot; Diagnosis, Evaluation and Treatment of Friedreich's Ataxia; Spasticity: hypertonus and use of the Modified Ashworth Scale; Diagnosis, evaluation and Treatment of Myastenia Gravis; Use of some generic and pathology-specific clinical tests; Notes on the use of scientific literature: types of scientific studies, levels of evidence, statistical significance, interpretation of result figures; Diagnosis, Evaluation and Treatment of Charchot-Marie-Tooth; Diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of Dejerine-Sottas Syndrome; Diagnosis, Evaluation and Treatment of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome; Hints of AFO braces on the market: practical use of Codivilla spring, Peromed and Dictus.
Teaching methods
The course is based on lectures, carried out through PowerPoint presentations with the insertion of explanatory videos. Practical integrations are carried out in the classroom with demonstration of using evaluation tools and therapeutic exercise.
