Prerequisites
A general knowledge of the history and cultures of the Middle Ages is required. Knowledge of the main characters and events of the Old and New Testament.
Learning outcomes
The role and purpose of images during the Middle Ages. Artistic cultures of Europe and Eastern Mediterranean.
Course contents
Images as explanations of the Scriptures for the illiterate. Christian artists rendered into pictures the events and dogmas of the Scriptures, so that even the illiterate could be acquainted with the principles of the religion. The initial lessons of the course will discuss such a role of Christian images (icons) during the Middle Ages. At the turn of the Duecento a passage from a popular art to a learned art (Giotto) occurs. A number of lessons will deal with the contents and formation of the Bible (Hebrew and Christian). Stylistic or iconographical history of Medieval art.

A good handbbok of Mediaeval art history.
Assessment methods
Presentation of papers. Oral exam.
The final vote is based upon:
- discussion during the lessons;
- a written paper to be given to the teacher the last days of the course (senior students only);
- final oral exam.
