Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce some fundamental notions of mathematics and statistics.
Course contents
Basic notions on sets and numerical sets. Algebric calculus.

Elementary equations and inequalities. Basic notions on analytic geometry.

The concept of function. Some elementary functions (powers, exponentials, logarithms and
trigonometrics). Applications (power laws in biology; logarithmic scales; periodic phenomena).

The concept of limit for sequences and functions. The concept of derivative. Fundamental derivatives and derivation rules. Definite and indefinite integrals. Elementary hints on differential equations and models of population growth (Malthusian and logistics).

Basic principles of counting. Permutations and combinations. Sample spaces. Probability measures. Conditional probability measures. Independent events. Bayes theorem. Random variables and their classifications. Distribution functions and density functions. Joint distributions. Moments: expected value, variance, covariance, and correlation coefficient. Some meaningful probability models: binomial, ipergeometric, normal, exponential.

Some hints on (classical) statistical inference: Statistical models, likelihood function, point estimation (maximum likelihood estimates and unbiased estimates with small variance), confidence intervals.
