Prerequisites
The course requires the ability to orient oneself in an international perspective.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to study the fundamental transformations of the international political-diplomatic system in the contemporary age.
Course contents
The course will analyze the following topics:
- formation and historical evolution of the international system (study methodologies and periodization);
- from the Westphalian Eurocentric system to the global system of nation-states;
- diplomatic dynamics of the different historical phases of the 20th century (between competition and cooperation, between globalization and fragmentation)
- the crises of the Empires after the Great War and after the Second World War
- poles of aggregation and interpretative paradigms of the bipolar period and decolonization (East, West, North, South)
- Europe of the twentieth century between conflicts and integration processes
- the enlargement of the International community of States and the roles of International organizations
- the transformations of the international system after the end of the cold war (between new international order and new geopolitics)
- from the "unipolar moment" of the United States to the new role of emerging countries
- the international challenges of the 21st century: terrorism, "new wars", demographic dynamics, energy issues, economic crises.
The general part of the course will be supplemented with monographic studies.
