Prerequisites
Knowledge of the Italian language.
With respect to the contents, the course requires knowledge of the history of theater and performing arts.
Since there will be references to authors and themes of the international scene, it is facilitating the knowledge of the English language.
Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to promote knowledge of the functions, objectives, processes, methods of implementation, design dynamics and results of contemporary practices and performing arts commonly referred to as "social theater".
In particular, the applicative contexts of health and detention will be investigated.
Learning outcomes for students are:
1. be able to recognize and describe the functions of the social theater, its objectives, work processes, intervention methods and its results from a theatrical and social point of view;
2. be able to insert the phenomenon of social theater in the broader context of the performing arts, with particular attention to the Italian context;
3. be able to analyze some specific dynamics that characterize the use of theater in the contexts of detention and health;
4. be able to apply the concepts learned during the course in carrying out the analysis of cases and experiences in the field;
4. be able to plan, create and communicate a presentation on a case of social theater.
Course contents
The program of the course includes an interactive didactic process which, starting from the analysis of social theater experiences, will favor the focus on the central contents that characterize the phenomenon of social theater and its study. In particular, these contents will be considered:
- social theater within the broader spectrum of contemporary performance and the use of artistic practices with social objectives;
- theories, practices, and methodologies of social theater;
- the international context of applied theater;
- the social theater operator: role, tasks, and training;
- the performative and social functions, with particular reference to the contexts of health and detention;
- meetings with experiences in the field of social theater and discussion with operators in the prison and health sectors.
Teaching methods
Classroom and remote lessons. Guided group work. Analysis of the results. Comparative evaluation and re-elaboration. Classroom presentations and comparisons. Individual and group application exercises.

Assessment methods
Learning will be verified both in progress and at the end of the course.
In itinere through two intermediate exercises: the first individual requires the analysis of a social theater laboratory experience; the second carried out in a group with the descriptive analysis of an experience of social theater in the contexts of detention.
At the end of the course trough an oral examination on some of the volumes (or collection of articles and essays) chosen from the bibliography indicated, and any texts that will be indicated in class. During the oral examination the student must demonstrate that he knows the contents of the course and knows how to orient himself among the themes and issues discussed in class.
