Prerequisites
Students should already have at least a B2 level in English. During the first semester students are required to attend grammar classes taught by mother-tongue teachers to brush up on their language skills and get ready to attend the official course in the second semester.
Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing students with the methodological knowledge that is necessary to write academic texts and to deliver oral presentations in an academic environment.
Course contents
In the first part of the course the focus is on the fundamental principles of essay writing. In the second part the focus is on oral skills, with particular reference to phonetics, pragmalinguistics and oral presentation strategies.

2) Seely, John, The Oxford Guide to Effective Writing and Speaking, Oxford University Press, latest edition (pp. 55‐83 and 159‐291) (two copies are available at the library of the Department of Political and Social Sciences).
3) Grammar revision: Raymond Murphy, English Grammar in Use, (with Answers). A Self-Study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate Students, Cambridge University Press. For more advanced students: Martin Hewings, Advanced Grammar in Use, Edition with Answers, Cambridge University Press.
4) Suggested dictionaries:
‐Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Oxford University Press;
‐Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary, Collins;
‐Longman English Language Dictionary.
Assessment methods
The exam consists of two parts: a written test and an oral examination. The written test must be taken before the oral and consists of two parts: a grammar test (1 hour) and essay writing activity (2 hours; only monolingual dictionaries will be allowed). The essay title will be provided by the lecturer. For examples of possibile essay titles, please check out TOEFL preparation materials by googling "Sample TOEFL academic essay titles." For the oral exam students will deliver a 10-minute academic presentation with power point slides on a research topic of their choice.
