Prerequisites
Written and oral comprehension of Italian language. Basics of algebra, analytical geometry, and calculus.
Learning outcomes
The course covers classical mechanics and thermodynamics. The aim is to provide the students with the basic knowledge which is required for the comprehension of fundamental physical phenomena and to devolop their skills in tackling easy problems in a quantitative and rational way.
Course contents
Introduction
Physical quantities. Units of measurement. Vector calculation references.
Kinematics of particle
Position, velocity, acceleration. Uniformly accelerated motion. Motion of a particle subject to gravity. Circular motion.
Dynamicics of particle
Newton's laws. Forces. Applications of Newton's laws.
Work and energy
Work. Work-kinetic energy theorem. Conservative forces and potential energy. Mechanical energiy. Nonconservative forces and conservation of total energy. Power.
Mechanics of systems of particles
Center of mass. Internal and external forces. Momentum, angular momentum, and collisions. Mechanics of rigid body.
Kinematics and dynamics of rigid body. Rolling motion. Static equilibrium.
Mechanics of deformable body
Fluid statics. Fluid dynamics. Elasticity of solids.
Oscillations
Harmonic motion. Damped and forced oscillations, resonance.
Waves
Mechanical waves. Sound. Inteference. Stationary waves.
Temperature and heat
Thermal equilibrium termico and zeroth law of thermodynamics. Heat and heat transfer. Specific heat, latent heat, and phase transitions. Thermal expansion.
Thermodynamics
Equations of state. Thermodynamics transformations. First law of thermodynamics. Heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps. The second law of thermodynamics. Entropy.
