Prerequisites
The course is part of the students' basic training, together with Medical Statistics and Epidemiology, preparatory to the lessons and activities in the Prevention field. To better follow the course, the student must have attended the courses and acquired the knowledge in these two basic disciplines.
Learning outcomes
The Basic Computer Science aims to provide students with the necessary skills to use the Excel application as a useful support to the profession of the Environment and Workplace Prevention Techniques
Course contents
Introduction to Excel use.
Descriptive statistics:
- mean, median, percentiles, mode, standard deviation, range using both
Excel as ‘electronic sheet’ and
Excel functions
- pivot tables for one variable or crossing two variables
- graphics
- correlation
Inferential statistics:
- Parametric unpaired and paired t-test.
- Test on homogeneity of variance.
- Oneway analysis of variance.
- Chi-squared test.
- Test on correlation
- Linear regression model.
Teaching methods
The plan of the course is based on practical section using personal computer.

Assessment methods
The examination will be written with a problem solving approach. The student will have to face some research questions, attesting to have acquired both the technical ability in managing and analyzing data sets to the personal computer (knowledge and skills) and interpreting the results obtained (competences).
