Prerequisites
The topics of the course are explained and discussed in a way that aims at stimulating students on physics problems.
Learning outcomes
The target of the course is to form students on classical physics. The study of mechanics and electromagnetism, as well as the laboratory activity are functional and targeted for learning a scientific approach to reality.
Course contents
The main topics considered in the course are: Mechanics (kinematics and dynamics) of the point particle; mechanics of particle systems; mechanics of the rigid body; laws of conservation and their application to energy and forces.
The second part of the course deals with electromagnetism: constant E and B fields, Faraday’s law, Maxwell equation and their implication in terms of electromagnetic waves. Oscillation phenomena and basic principles of thermodynamics and optics. Brief overview of modern, atomic and subatomic physics.
The course is complemented by notions of data handling and basic statistics, as well as by several laboratory experiments which deal with mechanics and electromagnetism (Ohm's law, Hooke's law, oscillators).
Teaching methods
Lectures are complemented by practical problem solving, laboratories and seminars.
The topics of the course are explained and discussed in a way that aims at stimulating students on physics problems.
Reccomended or required readings
J.S. Walker, “Fondamenti di Fisica” , Bologna, Zanichelli, 2005.
Assessment methods
The exams consists in a written test followed by a short oral examination which can improve (but also decrease) the written test mark.
Two partial written tests are foreseen. If both are passed with at least 18/30, the students can skip the written test.
