Learning outcomes
The steel course aims to provide students with the methods to deal with the design and construction of steel structures. The course explains the national and international guidelines and regulations and in particular, the European codes. In addition to the theory, the course refers to the various cases and study made in the building and construction phase.
Course contents
The steel course starts with an introduction on basic steel construction, which is divided as follows: history of the steel as a material and as a structure, the discussion of the national and international market, considerations of costs for steel construction, a brief explanation of the production of steel and characteristics of steel products.
The second part of the course provides various considerations for the conceptual design of steel. Identify the reasons for the use of steel in construction, considering structural aspects, aesthetic, and also practical. The different types of loads that should be included in the design of steel structures are discussed and critical loads are then identified. In addition, various systems of steel structures are introduced so that students can appreciate how the material could be applied in the real design.
The analysis methods for steel structures are introduced: elastic and plastic analysis, the level of the section and structural systems. Element in tension, compression, bending, shear and a composition of all the forces, are practically designed.
The third part of the course begins with lectures on the theory and design of steel connections and splices. Students are encouraged to consider different solutions of connections and steel joints. In addition, the influence of connections on the behavior of steel structures, and especially of steel frames, is discussed.
The last lessons of the course illustrate other topics of steel structures: floors, composite steel C.A., Design elements with slender chambers membering, fatigue, vibration and seismic design. Furthermore buckling is considered as a main source of vulnerability in steel design.
The course primarily deals with European standards and, in particular, the Eurocode 3.
