Learning outcomes
The Biochemistry course aims to introduce students to the structure-function relationships of macromolecules, with particular reference to the composition and the main functions of the tissues and fluids of the human body. Furthermore, the main metabolic pathways and their regulation at the molecular, cellular and tissue level and in order to provide the students with the biochemical knowledge to be applied in the bioengineering field are also given prominence.
Course contents
The main objectives of the course are to train students able to orient themselves in the vast discipline of Biochemistry, acquiring appropriate skills to understand and be able to describe what is indicated below.
The course will be divided into 3 parts of lectures and 1 workshop:
Part I - Topics covered will include a general introduction, biomolecules (structure and properties, diseases), enzymes (mechanisms of catalysis and regulation), cellular energy (cellular thermodynamics, ATP and transport of ions and small molecules through cell membranes, membrane transporters ), cellular energy metabolism (carbohydrates, glycogen, glucose, fatty acids, proteins and ATP).
Part II - Energetics and ATP: ATP and Respiration, Cellular and Energetic Metabolism. Focus on cell-material adhesion: in particular, the aspects inherent to the main factors involved in the cellular signaling process linked to mechano-transduction will be examined starting from materials with different mechanical properties.
Part III - Bone tissue: calcium-phosphate homeostasis, principles of bone biology, skeletal disorders, new factors involved in the biology of skeletal tissue, mechanical forces and cellular responses, cross-talk between bone tissue and stem cells, bone and adipose tissue, new methodological approaches. This one of the course will be carried out by an American expert in the field.
Laboratory - In this part of the course the students in groups of 5 will follow an afternoon of exercise in which they will participate in the deposition of cells on 3D scaffolds and after their visualization by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).
Teaching methods
The course will take place with oral lectures that will use multimedia systems. The teacher will be available throughout the course, by appointment via e-mail (visai.bioingegnria@unipv.it), to answer questions and support students during their training, even with individual meetings.
Reccomended or required readings
- Lehninger's principles of biochemistry, David L Nelson, Michael M Cox, Zanichelli Edition
- Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Voet Donald, Voet Judith G., Pratt Charlotte W. Zanichelli Edition
Assessment methods
The examination of the Biochemistry course includes an oral test on the main topics of the program.
