Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
at the end of this course the student should know the basics on road, railway and airport design and construction and related specifications.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
the student should be able to evaluate the best solution of rural road section and adopt appropriate materials for the construction attending the best practice.

Making judgments:
by the end of the course, the student should be able to design, with critical mind, a section of road and choose the best solutions to construct embankments and pavements.

Communication skills:
the student should be able to clearly present an transportation infrastructure design also by means of tables and charts.
Course contents
The course aims to give the basis for the geometric design of transportation infrastructures and the choice of materials an realization of road construction.
The student will acquire also the basic knowledge of all issues related to the civil air traffic to the function and design of airport infrastructure and railways.

Course program:
Transport systems (road, railways, airports).
Characteristics of the road users, human behavior and vehicles.
Perception of the road, signs and markings.
Classification of roads (Italian and european regulations).
Reference standard.
Resistances to motion and general equation for traction, friction, stopping sight distance.
Road design in horizontal plan, design speed, vehicle stability on curve, visibility in curve, spiral (transition curve).
Vertical alignment of road and horizontal and vertical coordination.
Road cross section.
Road embankments construction and elements of road geotechnics.
Soils compaction and subgrade resistance.
Aggregates.
Bitumen ant bituminous binders.
Mixtures for pavements.
Flexible pavement design (empirical and rational design). Environmental conditions influence.
Rigid pavement design, construction, maintenance and technical specifications.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into a series of lessons using also the frontal projection of powerpoint presentations, technical visits and exercises.
