Learning outcomes
The course focuses on Asian and African populations, taking into account the historical perspective and other socio-cultural elements that characterize the different environments. Methodological and theoretical tools will be provided, so students will be able to navigate and understand the population structure and dynamics, as well as the demographic and social paradoxes related to development problems and to the formulation of interpretative framework.
Course contents
The course will provide the basic methodological and analytical skills of population studies, in order to understand the demographic phenomena. Specifically, the course will address the demographic sources, the static and dynamic analyses of population, as well as the main theories and approaches about population growth, with a focus on fertility, migrations and population policies. Particular attention will be given to the interdisciplinary approach aimed at the analysis of population dynamics in different environments, with particular emphasis on developing and recently developed countries, the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals, and issues related to population growth and mobility
