Learning outcomes
Proficiency in reading and interpreting critical editions of ancient Greek and Latin literary texts. Proficiency in linking the manuscript evidence with the history of the textual transmission.
Course contents
Iliad 1: text’s questions, scholars’ answers (ancient and modern).
The course will present some issues representative of textual criticism of ancient Greek and Latin literary works. The subject will be treated by reading passages of the first book of the Iliad that cause philological and interpretive problems, and by analyzing the relevant ancient discussions as witnessed in scholia and other medieval learned tradition.
The exam program includes:
– reading of Iliad 1 in Greek and critical edition (Homeri Ilias, ed. M.L. West, I, Stuttgart-Leipzig, Teubner, 1998; rist. Berlin-Boston, De Gruyter, 2012).
– study of P. Chiesa, Elementi di critica testuale, Bologna, Pàtron, 2012 (2a ed.).
Teaching methods
Lectures. Use of teaching materials made available online (Kiro). Seminars on special topics, with the students actively involved. Lively interaction will be favored.
