General background of European history, geography and Literature
Learning outcomes
The course is meant to give a basic knowledge of the Ancient and modern history of European Architecture (since Ancient Greece to XVIII Century) and aims at developing competencies in the analysis of the most relevant buildings, as a fundamental tool for the project activity
Course contents
Main topics:
the birth of architecture; architecture and urban planning; space and its meanings; architecture as a language; architecture and geometry; proportions; perspective; architecture and colors; techniques and materials; architecture as a symbol; training for architects and patronage; architecture and theory of architecture; treatises from Vitruvius to XVIII Century.

History of architecture:
Greek and Roman Architecture; Paleochristian and Bizantine architecture; The Longobardian and the age of Charlemagne; The Medieval age: Romanesque, Gothic and late Gothic architecture; The first Renaissance: Brunelleschi and Alberti; The ideal city: Pienza and Urbino; typologies of Renaissance: Francesco di Giorgio, Filarete; Bramante and Leonardo in Milan; Architecture in Rome: Bramante, Raffaello; Michelangelo; Antonio da Sangallo; Peruzzi; Giulio Romano; Classic and Mannerism; Serlio; The Protestant Reformation; The second half of the century: Vignola and Palladio; Roman Baroque; Bernini, Borromini, Pietro da Cortona; Baroque out of Rome: Turin and Venice. The first part of the XVIII Century: Iuvarra; Great European Palaces; Versailles and Caserta; The Garden in Italy and in Europe; Neoclassical Age in Italy and in Europe.
