Learning outcomes
Understanding and assimilation of the fundamentals about the characterization of the most commonly used materials. Acquisition of basic operational capabilities for a balanced choice of the most suitable material for the needs of the planned use. The selection is to be combined with the awareness of its importance also for the lifetime of the product. The use of teaching materials in English offers the opportunity to acquire a basic international vocabulary.
Course contents
The framework of material science and technology. Structure of crystalline and amorphous materials. Correlation between internal structure and elastic-plastic behavior of materials. Correlation between internal structure and other material properties (thermal, electrical). Monocrystalline and polycrystalline materials. Common crystalline defects. Elastic deformation and plastic deformation. Characteristic properties of metallic materials, polymeric materials, ceramics and their composites. Mechanical properties, stress-strain relations, deformation and hardening. Some fundamental external actions and the corresponding states of stress and strain induced in the elastic range. Brittle failure, fatigue failure, fracture opening, failure for plastic flow. Types of materials and applications. The selection of materials in the design process. Mechanical testing for the characterization of materials. Biocompatibility and biomaterials.
Teaching methods
Class lectures with applications (16 hours).
