Learning outcomes
The course is a writing workshop (course title: English Writing for Architects) aimed at students enrolled in the fifth year of the Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering. The aim is to develop in students technical writing skills in English with special emphasis on some of the genres of specialised and professional communication, such as reports, project descriptions, project proposals.
Course contents
Design and construction professionals spend a large part of their professional lives writing, and yet most architects + engineers are not professional writers.
This course aims to introduce students to technical writing in English with a focus on the kinds of documents architects routinely have to write in their professions. The types of documents considered include reports, technical specifications, project descriptions and proposals, and design journals. Some hours will also be devoted to thesis writing.
At the end of the course students will be evaluated on their mastery of the writing conventions and editing guidelines that are associated with the different document types. Remember, your writings are just as important as your drawings!
Teaching methods
Workshop with guided activities, visiting professors' seminars, recitation classes. Attendance is strongly advised.
Reccomended or required readings
Spector, Tom and Damron, Rebecca. 2013. How Architects Write. London: Routledge.

Curl, James Steven and Wilson, Susan. 2015. Oxford Dictionary of Architecture. Oxford: Oxford University Press. 3rd edition.

Teaching materials for guided activities will be downloadable through the Kiro e-learning platform.
Assessment methods
At the end of the course students will be evaluated on an original piece of writing (group work of 2 max. 3 people is required of attending students), which must follow the writing conventions introduced and practised during the course. The type of document can be of the students' own choice as long as it belongs to one of the specialist genres dealt with within the course.
Non-attending students are expected to work individually and referred to chap. 2-3-4-5-6-7-8 of the set text (see bibliography) to write up a summary report on one of the genres described in the chapters.
