Prerequisites
The course is divided into basic and advanced course: the students will be assigned to the basic course if not adequately trained (for the criteria for assignment see: Avviso alle matricole). Students in this situation will be informed of the activities to be followed to recover the initial deficit. All other students will instead take the advanced course. You can not switch from one course to another without the permission of the teacher.
Learning outcomes
Objective of the course is the consolidation of linguistic and literary knowledges about the ancient Latin texts.
Course contents
Frontal lessons: Men and Goods in the Latin literature (the texts will be provided during the lessons).
individual study: (1) Cicero, De amicitia; Virgil, Aeneid, one book by choice; (2) A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, capp. III and VII; (3) History of Latin Literature from the origins to Apuleius on: M. Mortarino, M. Reali, F. Turazza, Profilo storico della letteratura latina, Loescher, Torino or G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Le Monnier, Firenze or E. Romano, G. Picone, F. Gasti, Lezioni romane, Loescher, Torino.
For the texts (1) and the manual (2) there are lessons in the Latin Lab.
Teaching methods
The lessons will be frontal and intended to illustrate the peculiarities of the texts analyzed and to create a historical-literary path inherent in the topic subject of the course.
For the preparation of the individual part of the exam, it is useful to attend the lessons of the Latin Laboratory (see this course program).
For students in difficulty with the Latin language, it is useful to attend the lessons of Tutorato di lingua latina (for further information, contact the teacher starting from the second quarter).
Reccomended or required readings
The bibliography will be shown during the lessons.
Assessment methods
The final exam is oral; there will be translation and linguistic analysis of the texts of Cicero and Virgil quoted above, questions about the chapters III and VII of Propedeutica al latino universitario, questions about the history of Latin Literature and then translation and commentary of literary texts presented during the lessons.
Students not attending may agree with the teacher.
Written exam is required for all the students whose curriculum includes more than 12 credits in L-FIL-LET/04 Latin language and literature, the written test may support since the first year.
