Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of history, art history, literature and philosophy.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to give students a historical and critical outline of architecture and urban planning from the late 18th century to the present day, with particular attention to the design aspects, the socio-cultural context, the critical debate, the contemporary experience of the visual arts.
Course contents
History of architecture and urbanism in the 19th and 20th centuries: The crisis of classical architecture (“revolutionary” architects); Historicism and eclecticism in the 19th century; William Morris and "the Arts and Crafts"; The Art Nouveau in Europe and in Italy; Otto Wagner and the Vienna Secession; Antoni Gaudi and Catalan Modernism; Louis Sullivan and the Chicago School; Hendrik Petrus Berlage and the Amsterdam school; Frank Lloyd Wright; Peter Behrens and the Deutsche Werkbund; Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus; German Expressionism; Italian Futurism; Russian Constructivism; Dutch Neo-plasticism; Auguste Perret and Tony Garnier; Le Corbusier; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; German architecture among the wars; Italian architecture among the wars (Terragni, De Finetti, Pagani, Figini and Pollini, etc.); Architecture of totalitarian regimes; Gunnar Asplund and Alvar Aalto; Louis Sullivan; CIAM and International Style; Louis Kahn; British Architecture and James Stirling; High tech; Postmodern; Five Architects (Eisenman, Graves, Gwathmey, Hejduk and Meier); Italian architecture after World War II (Scarpa, BBPR, Albini, Michelucchi, Moretti, Gardella, etc.); Neoliberty; Architecture in Britain and USA after World War II; Frank Gehry; Aldo Rossi; Rem Koolhaas; an overview on the architecture of the present times.

The exercises and the laboratory will be dedicated to the moments and personalities of the national and international scene, and to the knowledge of monumental buildings in Lombardy: in the present academic year, 2016/2017, the topic will be Italian architecture from Art Nouveau to second post-war (1900-1970), with particular attention to Milan. Interested students will be allowed to carry out part of the program as a seminar, producing a research to be agreed with the teacher at the beginning of the course, to be submitted in form of written work and/or classroom presentation.

Visits and inspections are planned in Pavia, Milan, Como, Turin and Genoa.
Any seminars and conferences will be part of the examination program.

M. BIRAGHI, Storia dell’architettura contemporanea I: 1750-1945 e Storia dell’architettura contemporanea II: 1945-2008, 2 voll., Einaudi, Torino 2008, to integrate with the topics covered and the images projected in class.
Useful reference tool can be: N. PEVSNER – J. FLEMING – H. HONOUR, Dizionario di architettura, Einaudi, Torino 1981 (and subsequent editions) [Italian edition of The Penguin Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, 1966].

For exercises and laboratory bibliography will be provided during the lessons.

NB: Additional bibliography will be discussed into the course.
Assessment methods
The examination will be in oral form; it will be based on knowledge of texts, lectures, visits and conferences and will take account of seminars (for students who have chosen this option).
