Prerequisites
Good knowledge of Latin Epigraphy and Roman History.
Learning outcomes
Better knowledge of Latin Epigraphy thanks to analysis of inscriptions from a meaningful city as Pompei.
A full comprehension of daily life in roman age (works, spare time, leisures, family and social patterns, eating behaviours and dietary, etc.) will be achieved through a deep analysis of historical sources.
Course contents
The epigraphy of a meaningful city as Pompei. Study of selected examples. An autoptical survey of Civic Museum of Pavia's epigraphical collection will take place at the end of the course of Latin Epigraphy.
Daily life in Rome. Working areas: agriculture, handicraft, commerce. Leisure time: game shows, theatrical performances and horse races, baths and bathing (leisure, hygiene and cosmetics). Eating behaviours. Family: marriage, children education, patria potestas.
Teaching methods
Lectures, with student's active contribution too, seminars and tutorial workshops.

1) Anthology of literary and epigraphical texts will be analyzed during lectures.
2) Handbooks of Latin Epigraphy:
- S. Giorcelli Bersani, Epigrafia e storia di Roma, Roma, Carocci, 2015 (II ed.)
- M. Della Corte, Case ed abitanti a Pompei, Roma, L'Erma di Bretschneider, 1954 (II ediz.): mandatory for not-attending students.
3) A deep study of two of the following handbooks:

Students carrying on a personal research on an arranged topic are required to one only handbook. For students not attending lessons is mandatory three handbooks.
Assessment methods
The competences acquired in Latin Epigraphy and Roman Antiquities will be checked by oral examination.

IIIrd trimester: course intended for students with no previous knowledge of Latin Epigraphy;
IVth trimester: course for students of Latin Epigraphy advanced.
