Prerequisites
Knowledge of Latin morphosyntax and basic lexicon; the Laboratory is primarily aimed at students of advanced courses (students with a maturity rating of 75/100 or higher who come from liceo classico or liceo scientifico); all other students interested are required to contact the teacher.
Learning outcomes
The Laboratory of Latin (1) provides technical and linguistic skills required in the institutional parts of Latin exams and (2) teaches the methodology for a correct textual analysis.
Course contents
There are two modules (a brief presentation meeting will take place at the beginning of the academic year):
Module 1 (30 hours in the first semester): technical knowledges of Latin language and metrics.
Explanation of A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, Pàtron editore, Bologna, chapters I-VII and guided reading of the most important Latin Meters. These topics are required at the exams of Latin Language and Literature, advanced course (first year, chapters III and VII) and of Latin Literature 1 advanced course (second year, chapters I-VII).
Module 2 (30 hours in the second semester): guided textual analysis.
Translation and linguistic commentary of selected passages from Cicero, De amicitia, and Virgil, Aeneis, Book I, with review of grammatical norms and metric reading. These topics are required at the exams of Latin Language and Literature, advanced course (first year) and of Latin Literature 1, basic course (second year).
Teaching methods
The content will be illustrated by both frontal and interactive lectures. Exercises of Metric reading are scheduled.

Module 1: A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, Pàtron editore, Bologna (last edition available).
Module 2: recommended editions: for Cicero, De amicitia: Signorelli (with linguistic commentary) or Rizzoli (with excellent introductory essay); for Virgil, Aeneis, book I: Signorelli (with linguistic commentary) or a bilingual edition of the entire poem (Einaudi, Garzanti, Marsilio, Mondadori).
