Learning outcomes
This course, aimed at students specialising in English enrolled in the two Master’s degrees in Linguistics and Modern Languages and in European and American Literatures, introduces the fundamentals of contemporary corpus linguistic research on the English language and its varieties, to focus on one specific field of application, namely specialised academic communication, contrastive analysis and translation, and stylistic analyses of literary texts.
The aim of the course is to develop in students a kind of corpus proficiency consisting in the ability to perform advanced searches through state-of-the-art software, have a basic understanding of how to interpret concordance data and frequency information and use and compile corpora to answer questions concerning language variation and specialised academic communication in English, contrastive analysis and translation (English-Italian), and stylistic analyses of literary texts.
Course contents
The course is organised as a graduate seminar where regular attendance is encouraged and where course participants are expected to read their reading assignments on a regular basis and come to class ready to discuss them.
The first part of the course is based on the set text Linguistica dei Corpora, Carocci (see bibliography) and introduces the fundamentals of contemporary corpus linguistic research on the English language and its varieties. For this part especially, regular readings are assigned after each class. In the second part, students are expected to choose and present a case-study to acquire further specialisation on one specific field of application, namely specialised academic communication, contrastive analysis and translation, and stylistic analyses of literary texts.
On the whole the course will enable students to develop a kind of corpus proficiency consisting in the ability to perform advanced searches through state-of-the-art software, have a basic understanding of how to interpret concordance data and frequency information and use and compile corpora to answer questions concerning language variation and specialised academic communication in English, contrastive analysis and translation (English-Italian), and stylistic analyses of literary texts.
Extra classes on advanced academic communication skills are scheduled throughout the semester and run by a Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico (dr. Robert Ponzini). Classes will include tasks and activities of the following type: academic orientation, oral presentation, interview.

Assessment methods
The exam consists in a written paper in English (short academic essay, max. 2000 words) addressing an original research question concerning corpus use for one of the areas of application covered by the programme. The quality of the essay will be evaluated taking into account contents appropriacy and organisation and language accuracy.
