At the end of the course, students will be able to properly illustrate the diachronic development of the discipline, demonstrating: a conscious approach to theatrology, individual capability for analyses, appropriate re-elaboration and use of the acquired knowledge, comprehension of the aesthetic and cultural dynamics.
Course contents
The program is structured in two parts: the institutional one, about the main lines of the history of the art of directing, and a specialised course entitled "Art of Directing and Theatrical Criticism in Italy".
Considering a broad overview of the main Italian theatrical magazines in the first half of the XIXth century and the newspapers that hosted reviews and dramatic chronicles of the major national critics, will be analyzed the various forms and techniques for the description of the art of directing in that period. A deep critic and historiographical reflection will be useful, in order to observe the raising of the art of directing in Italy and the work of some important foreign directors – also considering their several tours in the main Italian towns.

The lessons will take place at the Almo Collegio Borromeo in Pavia.
