A basic knowledge of digital media will be of use to students, especially when undertaking the final project required for the exam. However, all the content necessary will be provided during the course, and any additional content will be tailored to the needs of attending students

The aim of the course is to introduce students to new forms of museum communication, focusing in particular on scientific museums.

There are many stories behind the artefacts found in museums. Discovering them can enable visitors to reacquire their cultural tradition and enhance the feeling of belonging to an open community. The museum staff and visitors can enrich each other, collaborating in discovering new ways of understanding and new ways of narrating the collections. The choices made by various museums differ greatly, ranging from the use of augmented reality to internal, external or participatory digital storytelling, both in the case of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Some of these choices will be analyzed in detail. During the course students will be able to ask for more in-depth analysis and/or offer insights on topics of interest to them. These will be discussed in class. Visits (during the course) to Pavia university’s scientific museums are a preliminary requirement for the final project. These visits may then be repeated to analyze in depth specific aspects of interest, in collaboration with museum curators.

The course is based on lectures and seminars, as well as on visits to the scientific museums belonging to the University Museum System (during which multimedia communication techniques are analyzed, and ideas for the exam project are proposed). Students may also present their insights, which will be discussed in class. To help create a learning community, students are also urged to write posts and comments on the course blog and to personalize it graphically. The most interesting posts will be discussed in the classroom.

Reference bibliography and webliography will be provided and discussed during the lessons and posted on the course blog.

The end-of-course exam consists of a project and an oral test. Project specifications will be discussed and decided in detail with attending students, and these will be posted on the course blog. After presenting his project in the oral test, the student will be required to demonstrate that he has assimilated and reworked the topics covered during the course. The evaluation will take into account any optional presentations of insights during lessons and through blog posts.
