MARABELLI FRANCO (titolare) - 6 ECTS
Prerequisites
Basic notions of electromagnetism are requested. Some quantum physics concepts will be taken from the parallel quantum mechanics course.
Learning outcomes
Learning of the physical working principles of the main microelectronics and optoelectronics devices.
The target of the course is to get the student aquainted with some common electronic and optoelectronic devices used in research laboratories.
Course contents
Generalities about semiconductors. Fundamentals of electronic devices and their circuital properties: Junction diodes, bipolar transistor, field effect transistor. Elements of optics and optoelectronic and photonic applications, LEDs and semiconductor lasers.
The course will be comprehensive of practical exercises on simple circuits, basic optical configurations and on simulation programs.
Teaching methods
frontal lessons, aimed at explaining the physics principles on the basis of the device working, will join the laboratory activities. These will consist in a series of proposed experiments performed by small groups of students. The proposal is to make the students familiar with the practice and the limits of the laboratory work.
Reccomended or required readings
Microelectronic Circuits (The Oxford Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering), A.S. Sedra, K.C. Smith, Oxford University Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0195323033 |.
Assessment methods
Written and Oral examination. The examination is based on a written report on the performed experiments and an oral test about the physics of devices.
