Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of statistics, signal frequency analysis, basics on the main propagation phenomena.
Learning outcomes
Knowing how to choose the best wireless system for applications devoted to monitor and transmit data and biomedical signals, collected by sensor networks. Basics of telecommunication networks and systems, with a deeper analysis of the main transmission standards for wireless sensor networks.
Course contents
Basics of telecommunication systems, modulation techniques, digital signals, telecom networks. Wireless channels, multiple access techniques with their performance. Introduction to coding.

Introduction to wireless sensor network architectures: sensor, communication node or mote, data gateway and processing elements. Main network space topologies.

Radio communication standards for sensor networks. Cognitive radio networks, advance techniques of spectrum sharing.

Biomedical applications of sensor networks: localization and tracking, people and environment monitoring.

Intrabody and personal networks, integration of sensor networks with mobile phone systems.

Laboratory activities on wireless sensor systems.
