The course aims at introducing the principles of quantitative approach to human movement by its measurement and consequent assessment. Different contexts where movement measurement can be used (rehabilitation, geriatrics, ergonomics, sport, etc.) will be considered.
Course contents
Definition of measurement and assessment and their purpose.
Qualitative scales: general features; different types of scales; introducing a few interesting scales for movement and autonomy in ADL assessment.
Objective measurement: principles, units and the International System; measurement error and its propagation. Measurement chain and its static and dynamic characterization. Analog-to-Digital conversion and computer data acquisition.
Principles of kinematic measurements by means of sensors applied to the body (accelerometers, inclinometers, etc.) and by stereophotogrammetry.
Kinetic measurements; static and dynamic posturography. Principles of reconstruction of body movement, forces and joint torque from kinetic measurements.
Energetics of body movement: work, energy, power, efficiency. Energy sources for muscle work and their properties. Energetics of walk and run.
