Learning outcomes
The course aims to give a solid understanding of the specifics (structural, lexical, rhetorical, etc.) of the literary and poetic language, both in its own use and in different communication contexts (advertising, speeches, etc.). The theoretical aspects will be put to the test on a wide variety of texts of various kinds, refining the analytical skills of the students.
Course contents
The poetic function: from poetic language in everyday life to everyday language in literature.

The linguist Roman Jakobson described the "poetic function" as the massage oriented to the specificity of the linguistic sign, thus trying to define the 'poetics' of language use. Starting from an in-depth discussion of critical references, the course aims to provide the tools for a linguistic analysis of 'poetry' in its structural, linguistic and rhetorical constituents. Such elaborate notions will be put to the test on a rich choice of literary and non literary texts,
Teaching methods
Lectures will comprise discussion of readings, and analyses of phenomena; students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and analyses, and preparing a short dissertation. The given bibliography and other reference material will be presented during the lectures.

Non-attending Students
Not-attending students have to contact the lecturer in advance in order to agree on an additional bibliography and the dissertation to be prepared for the exam.

• Didattica integrativa
In addition to the Course, there are ‘esercitazioni’ with C.E.L.s (Collaboratori ed esperti linguistici), in which students are expected to develop academical writing and translation skills.
