Prerequisites
Students must have acquired at least 18 CFU of Italian Literature during the three-year degree. Students who have a lower number of CFU will have a program supplement.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge, in direct and autonomous form, of the principal tools and methods of study related to the discipline, as well as to extend the fee of the authors and the texts dealt with during the three year degree courses
Course contents
The Italian novel of the nineteenth century with particular reference to Vita dei campi e Novelle rusticane by Giovanni Verga. The topic will have a historical-critical-theoretical introduction to short fiction, structures, the relationship between macrotesto and texts of novelist collections. It will be briefed on the birth of the novel in general and in Italy in particular, for the specific texts will be illustrated the philological paths that led to the critical editions and will provide tools for their interpretation and for the correct acquisition of the ecdotic methodology for the reading of the textual apparatus.
the Verga's novels will be read and analyzed from a historical-critical point of view, will highlight the structure, novelty in Italian literary production, stylistic and linguistic aspects
Teaching methods
It will begin by illustrating the short-story historical-critical and theoretical way by referring to studies beginning in the second half of the eighteenth century to arrive at the most recent discussions on macrotesto and politesto by referring to the texts of the Italian tradition from Novellino to the verismo's short stories.
The reading of the texts will be the crucial moment of the course in which it will be deepened at all levels.
Students are offered the full reading of the texts indicated.

Assessment methods
Examination takes place in oral form. The history skills of 19th century Italian literature from Monti to D'Annunzio will be verified. Knowledge of critical historical-critical data is required, the ability to analyze the texts introduced and annotated in the on-line edition of the manual is verified. Analysis in which narrative and / or lyric structures, content, language and style are to be taken into account.

The exam is unique and it is not possible to support the two parts of the two modules in two different appeals.
