Learning outcomes
Introduce the students to approaches, problems and trade-off situations typical of industrial workplaces in biotechnology
Course contents
The course deals with technologies (fermentation, down-processing and strain development) used to produce bioactive microbial products. The typical screening approach is examined and then the general problems encountered in process-development. What promotes a discovery into a product is discussed considering as example the anti-infective area and the unanswered medical needs in the field. We then analyze the typical life-cycle of a drug-product considering the implications for the industry.
Teaching methods
The aim is to create in the class situations typical in industrial projects. Some real-life cases are examined to create experience. Technologies used to produce bioactive microbial products are described as components of a muti-disciplinar approach.
