Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of Greek and Roman history.
Learning outcomes
The module will explore some key issues in the ancient and modern discussion on the economy of the Roman world. It will provide the basic tools to understand both ancient sources (including literature, documents, and some archaeological evidence) and modern discussion on this topic. It will develop a range of valuable skills: discussion skills, oral presentation, teamwork, critical analysis of fragmentary sources.
Course contents
Part I. the Ancient Economy.
1. Between archaic and modern: problems in the history of the ancient economy.
2. Orders and status.
3. Landlords and peasants.
4. Masters and slaves.
5. Is Wealth good? Answers from cicero to Gordon Gekko.
6. Cash and Credit in the Roman world.
7. History of prices. The documentary evidence.
8. Res Caesaris. The emperor in the economy.
9. Taxes and trade.
10. Long-distance trades and contacts.
11. Demography and economy.
12. Late antiquity.
Part II. seminars on roads in the Roman empire held by prof. Rodolfo Bargnesi.
Part III: Economy and society of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt. Classes held by L. Capponi in the Egyptian Museum of Turin.
Teaching methods
Part I on teh Roman economy will be delivered through frontal lectures (2 hours).
Part II will include seminars held by professor Bargnesi on roads and maps of the Roman empire.
Part III will be a workshop on economy and society of Roman Egypt at Museo Egizio, in Turin.
