Learning outcomes
This course aims at providing students with a comprehensive legal framework about freedom of espression and information, having regard firstly to the European Union level and then focusing on the European Convention on Human Rights.
Course contents
The course is divided into two parts.

Having provided an overview of the basic features of the European Union legal system, the first part will analyse, by reference to the European Court of Justice case-law, the most relevant sources regarding freedom of information, having regard - inter alia - to the rules aiming at guarantee conditions of fair competition in the internal market of the audiovisual media services, data protection and right to oblivion.

The second part will focus on the European Convention of Human Rights, with a view to analyse the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights concerning freedom of expression and information, particularly as regards the essential role that the press fullfils as a "watchdog" in a democratic society, the reinforced protection of journalists, satire and the ban on hate speech.
Teaching methods
The content of the course is mostly delivered by lectures, while encouraging discussion and students' active participation.
